The most basic form of Buddhist meditation is called “Calm Abiding”, Shamata in Sanskrit, or Shi’nay in Tibetan (also written Shine or Shiney) and is intended to pacify the mind, so that our primordial wisdom can shine through.
Normally our mind is like a “‘monkey mind”, swinging from one thought to another with almost no rest in between. Shamata meditation is the best tool to pacify your mind. It will help you develop the habit of mental concentration, and help you keep your mind from wandering. Then, as you continue to practice, the mind will become peaceful and awareness will start to arise.
At this point the analytical mind practice, the deep insight meditation Vipassana, Lhagtong in Tibetan, is introduced to the meditator, though which we become able to penetrate though the tyranny of our thoughts and emotions and recognize them to be our natural wisdom awareness.
